Lessons from The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People

  • ·    In order to change, you have to address your character and not your behaviour. Our behaviour is formed by our personal fundamental principles. We see the world, not as it is, but as we are──or, as we are conditioned to see it. Our perception is not an objective reality, but rather a subjective interpretation tinted by the paradigm-glass we wear. To overcome an ingrained habit, we have to first identify the fundamental principle which forms the habit.
·
  •    Focus on the goose rather than the golden eggs. Maintain balance between production and production capability.
·
  •     Be proactive instead of being reactive. Do not allow external factors to influence your inner feelings and behaviour. Take control of your fate and the circumstances around you.
·
  •     Being efficient – doing the maximum amount of work in shortest time – is not important. Being effective – knowing what is important for you, what should be done first and keeping things under control – is. Hence, it is important to first be clear about your long term goals. Write a mission statement. In this statement, set down your personal creed, your core principles and values, and your long–term goals. This mission statement will act like a compass, it will give you a sense of security and direction.
·
  •       Begin with the end in mind. You need to be always conscious of your long-term goals, your values and norms, so that you can align all your actions with them. You should also visualise the outcome of your every action as clearly as possible.
·
  •      Put first things first. Rigorously prioritize things. The things which are important are those which bring us closer to our final goal and which are consistent with our mission statement – our values and our norms. Priority should be given in the following order:
1.      Important and Urgent
2.      Important and not-urgent
3.      Not Important and Urgent
4.      Not important and Not urgent

·
  •     Think win-win instead of win-lose. Strive to find a solution which is desirable by all parties.
·
  •      Seek first to understand, then to be understood. In order to influence others, listen to them and understand them. Rather than prematurely throwing our own judgements on others, understand the other person. It is not necessary that if a prescription worked for you, it will work for others too. Listen not to reply but to understand the other person.
·
  •      Synergize: Treat others with openness and respect, so as to achieve goals that no one could have achieved alone.
·
  •     Sharpen the saw if you want to keep sawing. Take care of your most vital resources: your physical, mental, spiritual and social health. Time taken to recuperate and recharge yourself is not wasted, rather it is the best utilization of your time.
